Minutes for the Meeting held on January 4, 2007


Present: Michael Solomon, Dick Weaver, Don Harris, Mary Ann Broderick, Chip Bromley, Hal Roberts, Riki Brennan, John Boyle, Marge Frederick, Chris Ortwein, Kent Lufkin, Wayne Bishop, Brandon Wind, Heather Welt, George Wilson.

Call to Order: Mr. Weaver called the meeting to order; there were self introductions.

Chairman’s Remarks: Mr. Weaver noted that he had wanted to combine the Economic Development Commission and BDC, since they have been discussing similar issues. He said he would like to start an increased publicity campaign. Mr. Weaver noted he had received a lot of good ideas from the Business Commons group. Mr. Solomon distributed a draft mission statement for Council members to review; Ms. Dunleavy will bring a revised draft brochure to the next meeting, and will try to incorporate the mission statement ideas into the brochure. Copies of the recent article “Newtown Business Development Council Seeks Participation of Local Businesses,” in the December 2006 Newtown News were distributed.

Codes Department Business Development Report

Director of Planning & Zoning Mike Solomon presented the report, covering December 2006, noting there was little new.

Approval of the Minutes

Ms. Frederick moved to approve the minutes of the November meeting as presented. Ms. Broderick seconded the motion, which carried unanimously.


Lower Bucks Chamber of Commerce

Joint Downtown Newtown Corporation

Main Streets Manager Chris Ortwein presented her annual report, noting that the focus of 2006 was marketing & promotion, the state award for the AHA! Friday events, and the new event, Girls’ Night Out. She distributed a fold-up map of the downtown Newtown retail area, noting that she has been working with the Bucks County Conference and Visitors Bureau; the map will be distributed to various places, including the BCCVB.

Ms. Ortwein noted that business space on State Street is 100% filled, including the long vacant 23 S. State Street, and that Newtown Floral will be moving from next to Tasteful Teas to Cambridge Lane. She distributed the 2007 AHA! brochure, noting that the February 2 nd AHA! Friday would feature new businesses at 123 N. Sycamore Street.

Ms. Ortwein said she was excited about the Newtown Creek Project, which involves the Environmental Advisory Councils from the Borough and Township, the JDNC Design Committee. These groups, along with others, are beginning to assess what realistically can be done along the creek (e.g. walking trail?). There will be a meeting of the Newtown Creek Coalition at Borough Hall on January 13 th at 10:00 AM; representatives from the Borough and Township Planning Commissions as well.

Newtown Business and Professional Association

It was noted that the general membership meetings are held the 4 th Tuesday of each months; the next Business Card Exchange will be held at Genesis Personal Fitness on N. State Street. Information about the association and its events is available at the NBPA website:

Economic Development Commission

Mr. Weaver said the Commission has been discontinued, to become part of the BDC. Mr. Weaver noted that work on the hotel will begin soon; they hope to have it completed by the end of 2007. He said that Cam Troilo is bringing tenants into his building on Terry Drive and Pheasant Run. Mr. Weaver said business has expanded in the Business Commons and are doing well. He said that Pitcairn is preparing to develop property on the Bypass.

Newtown Business Commons Association

Mr. Lufkin said they are trying to reach out to businesses in the Commons, looking for more participation in the association and on the Board. He said they are publishing a newsletter and mailing outreach and other initiatives. Mr. Lufkin said they are trying to be a unified force for purchasing power, and influencing and making opinions known to local officials.

New Busines

Heather Welt, of Unique Packaging and Design, is looking for office space for her business.

Next Meeting

The next scheduled BDC meeting will be Thursday, February 1, 2007 at Dolce Carini Restaurant.
