Meeting held on April 23, 2012

The Newtown Township Environmental Advisory Council met on Monday, April 23, 2012 at the Newtown Township Building. In attendance and voting were: Chairman Autumn Thomas, Vice Chairman Perry Katz, and members Sanford Bender, Pam Fitzpatrick (late), Eric Korn and Shannon Escalante. Also in attendance was Planning Commission Liaison Dennis Fisher.

Call to Order: Ms. Thomas called the meeting to order at 7:30 PM.

Approval of Minutes: Mr. Katz moved to accept the minutes of February 27 and March 26. Mr. Bender seconded and the motion passed 4-0-1, with Mr. Korn abstaining.

Ms. Fitzpatrick arrived at this point.

New Business

Welcome Day Planning: Ms. Thomas said that the Welcome Day packet she received included a schedule. Tables are provided, but tents are the responsibility of each booth holder. Arrival and set-up is to take place and 9:00 AM and breakdown is after 4:00 PM. The street will be completely closed to traffic between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM; no cars can be brought to the booths to deliver or remove items during those hours.

Ms. Thomas said she would have the Bird Town tee shirts, toy birds, Bird Town signs and pamphlets. She would also have a small game/coloring sheet for children. She asked the recording secretary to provide about 30 copies of the Bird Town enrollment form.

Ms. Thomas said she would borrow a pop-up tent from her employer, but asked for assistance at 9:00 AM for set-up.

Ms. Escalante and Mr. Katz agreed to arrive between 9:00 and 10:00 AM for set-up and to help man the booth for the first hour. Ms. Escalante said she could return at 2:00 PM. Mr. Korn agreed to arrive at 3:00 PM and to remain to help break down the booth. Ms. Fitzpatrick said she would try to attend at some point in the early afternoon and Mr. Bender was unavailable to help.

Liaison Reports

Newtown Creek Coalition: Ms. Fitzpatrick reported that the Coalition is actively seeking members to work on a fundraising committee. Money is needed to offset the cost for the bridge consultant hired to help preserve the Centre Avenue Bridge. The Coalition is planning a clean-up day for May 19 from 9:00 AM to noon. Ms. Fitzpatrick said that she has spoken at Coalition meetings about Bird Town, suggesting that Bird Town guidelines be used for any planting done along the creek.

Planning Commission: Mr. Fisher reported that the Township Engineer had indicated that she is waiting for revisions from the EAC on the stormwater pamphlet. He has also spoken to the PC about EAC involvement in review of tree replacement plans during land development.

Bird Town: Ms. Thomas reported that she has completed a Web site for Bird Town and is working on a Facebook page. She will be attending the second training session on May 5, 2012. This will involve a field trip to a property to evaluate it and draft a landscape plan for it.

Quarterly Forum: Ms. Escalante reported that she is planning a forum for June 2 at 10:00 AM with a focus on organic gardening. She would like someone from Bird Town to discuss native plants.

Mr. Bender suggested that he could find someone to speak on organic gardening and composting.

Mr. Korn said that he had some contacts who might be available to speak about sustainable agriculture.

Ms. Thomas said she would contact someone to discuss pollinator gardening. She would also contact the Food Shed Alliance.

Member Comments

Mr. Katz asked the other members to help him review the Township’s Web site to update it, remove outdated items and add new things. He would compile a master list to be forwarded to the Township’s technology clerk.
