The Newtown Township Police Department began their
D.A.R.E. Program in the summer of 1991 when Sgt. Charles A. Patton received his
D.O.T. Certification from LaSalle University in Philadelphia.
Under the direction of Chief Martin C. Duffy, the
D.A.R.E. Program was started in the Saint Andrew Elementary School. The students
in the 6th grade received the core program, consisting of the 17 week program.
In 1992 the D.A.R.E. Program was expanded into the Goodnoe Elementary School
within the Council Rock School District.
In the summer of 1992, Sgt. Patton received his Junior
High Certification.
In March of 1994, Chief Duffy expanded the D.A.R.E.
Program and interviewed for an additional D.A.R.E. Officer. Involved in the
interview process was Newtown Township Manager Cornell Hopkins, Goodnoe
Elementary School, Principal Harry Fritz, Council Rock High School, Asst.
Principal Theodore Sloan, Saint Andrew Elementary School, Principal Sister Anne.
Several officers were interviewed and a officer was chosen.
In July of 1994, Officer Glenn A. Forsyth was sent to
West Virginia for D.O.T. Certification. After graduating on August 5, 1994,
Officer Forsyth began teaching at the Goodnoe Elementary School. In the 94-95
school year there were 182 5th grade students that went through the
program.
In the spring of 1996, Officer Forsyth was sent to
Virginia Beach for his Junior High certification.
We are looking forward to a successful year for Newtown
Township Police D.A.R.E. Program under the direction and supervision of Chief
Martin C. Duffy.
